Hang on

I struggled to come to terms with the death of a friend in Russia. The subsequent work and poem reflect my visit to Moscow.

The sculptures represent unsettling forms, with each body posing for the viewer, emphasising their monumentalised objecthood and the tension between what these objects represent and what they actually are. “I like the viscerality of sculptural form and creating unsettling, recongured versions of the human body. I like it when people are forced to have strong reactions when they are close to the work, or if they are far away, they are attracted to move closer.”

We stood in the cold,
Not a word spoken,
In plastic shoe covers,
Shuffling on linoleum.

Bottle of whiskey in your hand,
Ready to thrust,
Into the doctor's hand,
Eyes filled with hope.

Relatives pushed out,
Told to stand outside, don't interfere.

No pain relief,
Horror stories,
Woman taking the plunge,
From a balcony window,
Blood soaked snow,
The pain was unbearable.
